Meet The Experts

Ikenna Smart

Assistant Video Coordinator

Portland Trailblazers

Ikenna Smart enters his fourth season as an assistant video coordinator for the Trail Blazers after joining the team in January of 2022. Smart most recently worked with Alabama men’s basketball as a graduate assistant from 2020-2022 where he supported the defensive coordinator and analytics team while assisting with player development. He also received a master’s degree in Sports Hospitality Management. Smart played college basketball for Wake Forest in 2018-2019 as a graduate transfer and earned a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Global Studies. Before transferring to Wake Forest, Smart spent four seasons at the University of Buffalo where he won 3 MAC championships and earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Trade and Geography. A native of Nigeria, Smart is the president and founder of Smart Sports foundation, a non-profit organization that provides athletic shoes and resources to young athletes and coaches in Africa.

Mike Schmitz

Assistant General Manager

Portland Trailblzers

Mike Schmitz enters his third season with the Trail Blazers in 2022-23 after joining the team as an Assistant General Manager. He brings extensive knowledge of evaluating talent both in America and Internationally to the franchise. Schmitz joins the Trail Blazers front office after working as an acclaimed draft analyst for ESPN since 2017. In addition to his role with ESPN, Schmitz served as a contributor to DraftExpress.com, a comprehensive scouting service utilized by NBA, NCAA and international teams. He has also worked as an assistant coach for the Ugandan national team since 2018. His experience includes extensive travel across North America, Europe, Africa and Australia to discover and analyze future NBA prospects. Prior to 2017, Schmitz was an NBA draft analyst for Yahoo Sports and covered the Phoenix Suns as a writer and video analyst. Additionally, Schmitz worked as a video coordinator for the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA G League during the 2012-13 season. Schmitz is a 2012 graduate of the University of Arizona.
